Another week gone by…another Project Sewn garment completed!  This week’s theme is Make It Pink, and I was eager to participate.  I mean, just look at that stash of pink fabric.  All thrifted goodies, all waiting to be morph-ed into beeyouteefull clothing.  Honestly, I didn’t intentionally set out to have a pile of pink.  I didn’t even think I was a pink person, if you know what I mean.  But here I am, practically buried in the rosy hue, and loving it!  How did I choose?  Well, the pink paisley fairly screamed, Pick Me!   So I did!  I was, I’m pleased to say, decisive on this point.  It was deciding what to sew that kind of tripped me up.  Every brilliant idea I had, would get mentally pushed aside by the image of a pink paisley spring jacket.  But I already have a pink jacket, and surely one pink jacket is enough, whispered my practical self.  But, as you can see, this fabric was destined to be just that. I guess one pink jacket is not enough.  

 
This project was one big happy sigh of relief!  It ticked along from start to finish with nary a hiccup.  The pattern, Simplicity 2256, was almost the exact mental image I had in my mind, {yes that one, the pushy one} and it sewed up like a dream.  I quite look forward to sewing it again.  I did tweak the pattern, but ever so little.  I moved the inseam pocket from the center front seam over to the side seam.  Having previously made a jacket with an inseam center front pocket, and not particularly loving that feature, it was a no-brainer.  With this simple change, I was able to make the pocket larger.  Okay, see those little flappies with the gold buttons?  Strictly a design feature on the original pattern.  Me…I made those flappies functional.  Inseam pockets there too. Uh huh!  Not sure that I’d actually put anything in them, but they are official, working pockets, and I’m proud of ’em.  Let’s see, anything else?  I altered the button tab on the back a little; it’s a little larger, and fastened via actual buttonholes.  Oh!  D’oh, almost forgot to tell you…I lengthened the pattern 4 1/2″.  I would have gone longer, but I didn’t have any more fabric.  I also added a back vent…which probably isn’t really necessary, but I quite like it.  And!  I lined the coat as well.  Okay, I promise, that’s it!  The directions were straight forward, but I rarely follow every step as outlined.  Case in point.  I never sew a set in sleeve! Without fail, standard instructions are to sew the front to back at the shoulders, sew the side seams, sew the seam of the sleeve, and then go to great efforts to stitch the sleeve into the little armhole.  N’uh uh.  I have, for as long as I can remember, sewn the shoulder seams, and then sewn the sleeve to the armhole flat.  Soooo much easier!  Then, after the sleeve is sewn, all I do is sew one continuous side seam from the finger tip end of the sleeve right down to the bottom of the garment side seam.  I have a photo above that shows the sleeve pinned in. Sorry about the poor lighting in those sewing room photos.  There is also a photo of an inseam pocket in the works.
 
Okay, completely off topic, but last night I had the strangest dream.  I was in a very old, very cold, abandoned house.  You know, the type with decaying furniture covered in musty sheets, and a thick layer of grey dust clinging to every surface.  I was in danger, someone bad was coming after me.  I made my way upstairs and entered into a bedroom.  I had been sewing, and had a sewing needle and thread in hand.  As I went up the stairs and along the hallway, I somehow left a tangled trail of thread in my wake. It was strung across the banister, it was woven through tarnished wall sconces, and looped around door knobs.  As the bad man, {whom it turns out was Pierce Brosnan and hello what could be bad about that I ask} made his way up the staircase, he became entangled in the thread, finding it more and more difficult, not only to move, but to orient himself.  He did finally end up in the bedroom, {again, the problem is?} only to have the chandelier fall on him.  I think it killed him.  Woops!  That’s it…I woke up.  What does this mean other than nothin’ really?  Well, I’m thinking that it’s deepest meaning might be that sewing does indeedy have the ability to save your life. Bwaahahahaha!

The scenery today, or lack thereof, is due to a few tiny snowflakes starting to fall.  I may be dressed for spring.  I may be dreaming of spring.  I may even be dreaming of wearing this jacket in the spring..but spring it most definitely is not!  I have to tell ya though, it’s kind of cool sewing for the upcoming season, and not for the nearly over season…

    I am tickled pink just looking at this ever-so happy, beautiful and wonderfully stylish jacket. If I were to be shopping and spot that jacket, there would be NO way I would leave the store without that in by possession. You are one talented lady.     Sue, you are truly adorable! What a fantastic way to wake up and start my Monday!     Sue this is a good mood kind of project. I'm happy just looking at it. Your workmanship is unbelievable; truly. I would never undertake something so complex, which probably doesn't seem complex to you because you are so accomplished. Anyway, I do love the way you mixed your prints beautifully~ there is such a great mesh and the coast becomes you. LOVE!

    Sue, you are a genius! This is my favorite outfit of yours, after the Traveling Yellow Skirt one. Pink and orange and paisley – you can't go wrong! I think adding the extra four inches was a brilliant idea, too. Not only does the coat look more graceful, but you get to see more of that beautiful fabric. And I loved scrolling down to see your shoes and the bag full of tulips, too. I'm sure you can keep the snow at bay just from your sunny presence!

    Your dream is interesting. I think it means you want to wrap Pierce Brosnan up in your threads and keep him in your web/lair/nest – whatever. Too bad about the chandelier killing him!

    Let's start with Pierce. Okay, it could be that sewing saves your life…or it could be leaving a trail of thread for boogey men to come after you. You are so talented, and notice every tiny little error in your work…what if the boogey man is the pressure you put on yourself for such perfect garments? Or being judged in the awesome sewing contests you've done? Or maybe you don't put an insane amount of pressure on yourself…but your work is flawless. To sew with that precision I'd need someone behind me threatening me with a whip…or a lot of experience. Or maybe a lot of motivation.But if you are a perfectionist, then the boogeyman is you!! Or maybe I over analyze dreams. Either way, your jacket is a dream! My God Sue; one pink jacket is never enough. And you look so good, 2 may not be enough. You will never see ready to wear made so beautifully made. Stunning work!!

    I love pink. I love these pink prints, and I love them on you. You are beautiful and they look great on you. Spring herself, you are!
    I had a little epiphany looking at these photos. I've not been looking forward to spring brights as they feel jarring to me and on me in the electric shades we've seen recently. I will look extra hard for more discrete pastels this year … perhaps I'll do better. You always inform!
    I've also been a whiny baby because I couldn't find a pink dress coat anywhere. And since I couldn't find what I wanted, I stubbornly didn't buy anything pink. Probably need to rethink that, huh?

    Sue, what would you rate this particular pattern as far as degree of difficulty? I notice you said that you only had to tweak it a little, the rest of the things you did were by choice.

    I adore this jacket. And it suits you so well. I am glad that you ran out of material as this length is just right (well… In my opinion. Feel free to think differently haha). Now for your sewing…you changed everything that was easy about the pattern (no lining, no pockets). You are very good seamstress. I had a look at all your other coats too: so pretty and well made. As for already having a pink coat.. come on… that other one is totally different.
    And for your next dream… I hope Pierce Brosnan catches up with you in the bedroom and turns out to be ever so sweet instead of threatening hahaha. I love Pierce too.
    Nearly forgot to praise you for the shoes and the bracelet and the shiny bags (big and small). Very well styled. Great post.

    Good question Flo, but difficult to answer. I think I am an advanced sewer, so I'll work from there. I had no problems in any area with this pattern. Having said that, the coat has fitted sleeves which are tricky for a novice sewer. There is also a bit of finessing when sewing the facing and collar onto the garment. This is to be expected when sewing this kind of neckline, but again, it can be challenging for a sewer with less experience. I was say it is an intermediate pattern, definitely not a beginner's pattern. Hope that helps?

    Yes, that does. I don't consider myself an advanced sewer, but I'm not exactly a beginner either. I read a review of the pattern itself elsewhere and that person had similar sentiments. Sleeves always seem to be a bit tricky, thank heavens the big poof ones are no longer in style, those were always a nightmare!!!

    Now I just have to wait for Joann's to run a 99 cent sale on Simplicity patterns! I had another thought too–I wonder how this pattern would work with fleece fabric? It wouldn't look quite as tailored, but it sure would be toasty warm! I definitely want to try making one of these in pink fabric as well.

    I only buy patterns on sale too. My local fabric store is discontinuing Simplicity and New Look, and I bought this and others for $1.50 – $2.00. A good investment! I'm all for sewing garments in unexpected fabrics, but I'm not sure I would use fleece for this particular jacket. I think the lapel and collar would get too floppy.
