Woot! Woot! I’m a little giddy! I made my first ebay purchase with this vintage Perry Ellis Vogue pattern. Okay, technically speaking, it’s not my first purchase. But it’s my first giddy purchase. My first ebay purchase, years, and years, ago, was a recipe guaranteed to eradicate any and all traces of cat pee. It worked, like a charm, by the way…and come to think of it….I was more than a little giddy about that too, so there ya go. Anyhoo-how, here I am in my bit of heaven wearing my Perry Ellis pink jacket. I first sewed this pattern back in the early eighties. Loooved it then, and I love it now! My original pattern, in size teensy, is long gone. It’s only recently that I started searching for the pattern again. As are the laws of the universe, it showed up, in my almost size, a few weeks ago…just when a few style bloggers were posting about the rising popularity of over-sized coats this season. Talk about good timing. The fabric is thrifted, from my stash, so I’m unsure as to it’s content. I can, or rather my iron can, attest to it having at least some poly in it…a wee bit temperature sensitive it is. Having said that, it feels like it’s mostly cotton; it’s crisp, a nice weight, and just the right amount of cozy. The jacket features a deep, inverted pleat at the center back, and inverted pleats in the raglan sleeves. It also has extra deep pockets! Now, the trousers…a great, giant leap of faith…sewing plaid pants I say! The fabric is also from my thrift stash and I have enough for both a skirt and trousers. Plaid is on the talk show circuit this autumn, so again a perfect moment to get brave and sew these attention getting bottoms! As I eluded to, my Perry Ellis pattern is a tad on the small size…no issue at all with the jacket, but the pants…meh, a little too much altering would be required. So sad, as the pants were always a favourite too. Hopefully, I will be able to use the pattern soon! Instead I used a retro-ish, Audrey-ish pants pattern that I was able to whip up in an afternoon. The pattern cover says right on the front, The Easy 90 Min Pattern! Um, okay, 90 minutes to sew, but it took me an hour to layout and match the plaid. I do have one small issue with this pattern. The pattern drawing shows the pants as very slim fitting, but on me, they look much looser. I didn’t really notice until looking at these photos, but I am tempted to take in the side seams…which in all likelihood will take me another 90 minutes.
Vancouver days are getting both cooler and shorter! This outfit feels just the right amount of cozy for me. And I love how the colours brighten up the grey day.
Okay, I know I always say this little blog is all things Sue, but today I want to introduce you to a talented young friend of mine…Lydia Hol…poet, storyteller, and multi-instrumentalist. This summer Lydia earned a coveted spot in Music BC and 102.7 The PEAK’s Peak Performance Project! After attending bootcamp in August, and performing live in September, she now has a chance to win money to help launch her music career. Sue, beautiful coat! You made this? So envious. The colour is a dream and I love the detailing. It's nice that you have returned to a style that you knew and loved in the past, isn't it? Xoxo
Hey Kelly! Thanks for stopping by. This pattern is deceptively straightforward to sew. And you said it so well…returning to a style that I knew and loved in the past…just feels so right!
You look fantastic!!! I am in to oversized coats myself. They feel so comfy and look so chic. I love your pink pumps btw.
Mysmallwardrobe.com
Thanks Carelia! I smiled when I saw your most recent post in my inbox. You are working the gingham plaid pants beautifully! And the pink pumps? Makes me feel I'm channeling a wee bit of Carelia style!
Love, love love this jacket! The pants are adorable too, but there is just something about that jacket……….. great job!
I laughed about your giddiness over the pattern (and the cat pee remover). Isn't it funny how simple things are sometimes the best? I had a similar feeling earlier this week when I ran across some seasonings that I can't usually get around here at a deep discount retailer. My husband just rolled his eyes. (as I put three containers of it in the cart)
Flo! Yes!!! These little things that have us doing the happy dance…we're so alike. And about the jacket…I just never forgot it. I really love Perry Ellis patterns, and am now hooked on trolling ebay for another.
Oh my goodness what a beautiful color palette. I love that outfit!
Thank you Faye. Maybe not typical colours for autumn, but they sure make me happy!
Wow, I love your coat (and the shoes, but someone else made them)! That is a great pattern, very cool, and having the coat in pink is spectacular! Over-sized coats are the thing this year? Dang, I just bought a tailored one. Oh, well.
Lovely pants, too. Such a pretty plaid! You look gorgeous!
Remember Val, we write our own fashion rules! Thanks for the kind words!
Beautiful colour, your jacket. In my book, pink is a neutral! It goes with everything.
Beautiful jacket. Love all the pleats. The pants are great too.
Though I don't currently have cats, would you please publish the recipe for cat pee remover ?
Thanks for your lovely post.
Barbara
Thanks Barbara for your lovely comments. I was sworn to never reveal the recipe…but I think it's all over the Internet now anyways. I will see if I can find a link for you.
Oh Sue, this is ever so lovely. The coat, the trousers… and the shoes make the picture perfect.
Although I think the trousers are fine, they might even be better if you indeed take them in a bit. (Don't cut of the seams yet before you had a look whether it IS better haha.)
You are a wizzard with needle and thread.
Oh and I tried to vote for Lydia, but when I hit the link, I could not find her in the list. Am I missing something?
Greetje
Hey Greetje! Thanks for mentioning about the trousers. I want the encouragement to take them in a bit. 🙂 But yes, don't cut until certain.
Lydia is in the third row, at the far right side. Thanks so much for taking the time!!
Gorgeous look, the jacket is beautiful and the pants are really cute. The explosion of color is perfect to brighten the fall. The subsequent cut jacket and raglan sleeves are beautiful. I really like the jersey you wear.
Thanks Josep, for your thoughtful comment. I love that description…explosion of colour…!!
loverly!! brings back memories
A fan of Perry Ellis, or my first version perhaps?
Sue, I'll go vote for your friend! And I love the pleat detail in your jacket sleeve. That fabric looks buttery soft in the photos. I've never matched plaid, but I have a plaid challenge coming up so maybe I'll try:)
Thanks Amy! The way I lay out plaid fabric is cutting one piece at a time…ie cut one front and one back piece…then I remove the pattern piece and lay the cut piece onto the fabric matching up the lines. Seems like a lot of effort, but I find it the fastest, most accurate way of lining them up. Good Luck!
Hello gorgeous Lady! What a wonderful outfit to start grey fall. Every detail of is is marvellous. The fold in the sleeves and in the back and the wonderful pink pumps, the bright colors of the checkered pants and not to forget this cute handbag. All in all you created a masterpiece. Once more I wish I have more sewing skills.
Have a wonderful week Sue!

Aw Sabine…a sweet comment from a sweet lady! xo
Gorgeous bright colours, Sue, and yes, oversized is quite the thing at the moment. I tried on a vintage 80s coat in a charity shop which was that style, but felt completely swamped by it, possibly because it was full length. Your shorter version has that lovely swing shape without it looking too big, it's great and beautifully made. I do agree that maybe the trousers could be narrower, to compensate (if that's the right word?) for the volume of the jacket. As always, your seamstressery is awesome, and you look wonderful.
I'm another one interested in the magic cat pee eradication formula! xxxxx
Thanks Curtise! I forgot to mention in my post, but this jacket calls for shoulder pads. iieeeyiyiya…but I had to put some in in order for the shoulder to sit correctly. I used the smallest size that I could. And thank you for suggesting the trousers to be narrower…{wouldn't do any good to have narrower *pants* eh}…I barely squeaked through without looking dumpy, and that's thanks to the heels. Larger volume on top means I really must go smaller on the bottom. The jacket looks awesome with my skinny jeans, for example.
Yes, I will take a look and find the recipe for you too!
Great swingy jacket! Love the colour and the pleats! Unfortunately, I'm too klutzy to wear heels like that.
The pleats really make the look, and of course, they help with the swinginess!
What a gorgeous outfit, Sue…I am hooked right now on vintage patterns! The lines of these and the COLORS are perfect on you!
Thanks Margy! Not to sound like an old hen, but they sure made great, easy to follow patterns back in the day. As I was searching for this gem, I kept coming across other Vogue patterns that I loved…I too am hooked!
Wow, love the color and those pleats are absolutely perfect!
Thank you! I'm glad you like the colours. And unexpected departure from typical fall tones, but they are my palette!
You made a great purchase on the pattern…the detailing on this coat is incredible! What a wonderful addition to your wardrobe. and you are a talented seamtress!!
Can't even imagine what it must be like to make your own chic clothing like this. Amazing!
Jacket is looking good with your new short do!
Shirl
Gorgeous coat, Sue! You look wonderful wearing it, and your curls look delicious. : ). Thanks for linking up.
Wow, love that coat and how fun that it was a pattern from days gone by. I think making the pants slimmer would be more modern, so think it would be wise. Congrats on matching that plaid!!!
What a cool coat Sue. I'm plaid crazy myself so your pants are so great to my eye. I love the pink with your hair and your shoes top this outfit off with style!
blue hue wonderland
You never fail to amaze me.. stunning coat and great color!

You whipped up your pants in an afternoon? I am amazed with your skills and your talented eye. The jacket is stunningly beautiful on you. You have inspired me to dig in my closets for some pink. I'm sure that it is lurking somewhere.
Off to check out Lydia!
Wow. How I wish I could sew some pants in an afternoon! Or anything at all for that matter! LOL (my grade 8 home Ec teacher is still disappointed with me).
That jacket is wonderful. The bright pink is so unexpected with that vintage cut.

An outfit that makes me smile! Beautiful colors, gorgeous jacket. I am so envious of your tailoring abilities. Norma VanV
That coat!! So amazing..and so in style right now. I love it and I love that you made it yourself.
And those shoes are great, too. Now we are hot pink pumps twins!
I love your jacket and, yes : many brands have some wide sized coats this year! Your purchase on ebay is very beautiful, ( me too bought on ebay more than once ) and I love the pants pattern. The whole outfit is bright and so nice on you! ( to say nothing of your amazing shoes! )
It seem that you aren't wearing thights jet…lucky woman!!
Looking so very pretty in pink! Such fabulous colours and wowee I adore those pants you made, especially with the heels. Clever clever seamstress!

I LOVE this jacket! Accepting commissions? You look completely gorgeous. On a dead run, in my umpteenth hour of trying to fix our water heater. About to give up, but took a minute to say how fabulous you look and how happy you should be with your endless talents!
Bright. Cheerful. Vivavious. Exuberant. Fun! Love it Sue!
My dear Sue, you are a pink perfection, ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
Love it all.

Oh, dear Sue. You have achieved so adorable with this suit jacket and pants! I do not think there are enough words in my vocabulary to express as far as my admiration for these two items! You are a genius!!!!
Undoubtedly one of my very favourite things about your terrific outfit posts is your expert eye for colouring combination creation (and colour + pattern matching). As someone who never shies away from the whole wide, wonderful rainbow when getting dressed herself, it's always fantastic to connect with other stylish folks who share my passion for all manner of hues and the palettes one dreams up to feature them in.

*PS* Thank you very much for your splendidly nice comment on my vintage plaid vest outfit post yesterday. Okanagan Falls really is a charming, endearing little corner of the province, I completely agree.
Love the pink!! And yes, oversize is looking so fresh and it looks amazing on you – and again, just so impressed with how you can just whip up exactly what you want. Absolutely gorgeous and so… you!!!
xo ~kim
So great! Love how bright it is!
I love how you bring your gorgeous energy and creativity to my little corner of blogdom. The Perry Ellis coat is fabulous and I love how you used fabric from your stash!! I've been surveying my stash but ended up online instead. Maybe I'll sew tomorrow, especially after seeing your triumphs. XXOO
I am always, always impressed by your skill and energy Sue!! You did an AMAZING job on that coat, and I love the color you chose to make it in!!!
Also, If you are willing to share that cat pee eradicator recipe…I will be forever in your debt. I no longer have the cat, but his smell is with us still.
xo,
Alyssa
OOooo! Nice! I like. Love the color. Great make!!! Jacket has lots of possibilities. Mary
