Destined to be a Suki Robe : : a Helen’s Closet Pattern
Hiya peeps.
A solid thank you for the comments on my last post.
I often hold back when it comes to sharing….you know, those heavier emotions like uncertainty, overwhelm, worry. It’s not just here on my blog….it’s real life too.
And yes, I was tempted to leave that post in draft until I changed my thoughts, but who knew when that would be…
Fortunately…a quick get ‘er done post was helpful.
Also helpful…
Wearing my hot pink Suki Robe.
Pretty much the opposite of my first iteration here, amirite?
I bought this fabric…same time, same store…as my soft, floral, Asian inspired fabric. At the rear of the store I could see several colourful sheeting fabrics displayed on the wall. I noticed them from, like, 50 yards away. I could not get this fuchsia one outta my head. I wanted it. so. much. I waffled though…wot, why? Well, I’ve been really good about sewing from my stash this year and I’ve been really good about not buying fabric just because I really love it.
Now. Just because I really, really, really love it…that I can do.
Plus. A mental promise to sew it….this season. Which I did do. {pats self on back}
This time around, I added a silky pink bemberg lining. It wasn’t difficult to do. To begin, I made one pattern adjustment…trimming 5/8″ off the center front edge of the front pattern piece. After sewing the robe fronts, back and sleeves together, I did the same for the lining pieces. Then I sewed the lining to the robe with right sides together along the bottom hemline and along the center front seams with a 1/2″ seam allowance. After trimming, turning and pressing, I basted the lining to the robe along the sleeve bottoms and the neckline. I then treated the two layers of fabric as one, attaching the sleeve and front band facings as per the instructions. My facings are hand stitched…just personal preference.
I made the self tie, but I’ve never used it. Visually, it breaks the gorgeous bold pattern, particularly on the back view. That being said, I’m happy I have one…you know…in case I ever wear it as an actual robe.
One last view of the large scale pattern. I mean…looky dat…just two flowers on the back. This fabric may have been designed for a duvet cover but….seriously…I think it was destined to be a Suki Robe.
G and I snuck in a brief pre-rain walk in Friendship Gardens, New Westminster. I think the ducks were amused.

Oh, Sue. Gorgeous. I want one. Now!
Thanks Coco! You need one. Now! I know….total enabler.
Oh my! You have outdone yourself here Sue!
The photos, your hair, the styling of this incredible one-of-a-kind-Sue-piece should be on the cover of a magazine!
LOVE your kimono! SO much better than anything you tried on in the thrift store! Ha ha!
The colour is stunning on you. Especially with your hair.
Bravo!
Suzanne
Aw…thanks so much Suzanne.
Now that I have this pattern, there is no more looking in the thrift stores…that’s for sure.
So, so Fabulous and you wear it so very well. Kudos!!
Thanks Neti.
I think I wear it well because it just makes me feel so fabulous!
Glorious in the large scale print and bold colour ;o)
Thanks Colette.
In hindsight, I think I should have discussed that large scale print just a bit more in the post. Because it’s sheeting fabric, it’s super wide and the pattern repeat is huge. Made my heart sing when I was thinking of the possibilities.
Just be you, Sue! You are colourful and adorable and perfect in every way. Gorgeous kimono!
Thanks Louisa. Now I am thinking of that lovely little Dr. Seuss jingle about nobody being youer than you…Love it!
Oh my goodness, I love this! What a beautiful color and print, and it all looks fabulous on you with your red hair! Stunning!
Thanks Nicole! I don’t think I’ve ever heeded the ‘redheads can’t wear pink’ silliness….good thing, yes? I adore pink!
That is one fabulous kimono, Sue! Wow, I am just gobsmacked by that glorious pattern! If I spotted this in a store I would clutch and run for the checkout. Nicely done, and looking gorgeous, you.
Thanks Sheila. LOL…like the Ikea ad…Start the car!!! I don’t think I’ve seen anything like this in all my fabric shopping….including Chintz…which I’m so sad is no longer in Vancouver. When I get to Victoria to see you, I’ll be visiting Chintz while I’m there.
Sue, I adore it. If you ever get tired of it, send it to me. Although there will be a lot of candidates for that I guess. What a superb piece of clothing. And so well styled! Can you tell I am very enthousiastic?
Love your hair in these pictures too.
Nice and wild.
Greetje
Aw, thank you so much Greetje! I was going to say it might be a little short on you….but you know what…it would look just as fabulous as a shorty jacket.
Yep…time for the longer hair for a while. My curls like the freedom.
So you’ll send it??? (hahaha, just pulling your leg).
Our is so very elegant and those colours are fabulous!
Thanks Nancy. It does feel elegant, which surprised me a bit. I mean…I bought fabric for bedding. It’s bright! So things could have gone in a different direction, LOL.
Beautiful, as are all your outfits. Where did you get this fabric? I see a west coast visit in the future, lol.
Thanks Heather.
Oops…yes, I should make mention of the fabric store. Maybe I’ll add an edit to the post or mention it in a future post. Sheeting fabrics are not so easy to find.
I bought it at Kapra Mandi. The store is in the Vancouver suburb of Surrey. Surrey has a very vibrant Indian community and Kapra Mandi is one of the many fabric stores in a tight little region. Their selection is very different from my usual haunts…Fabricland, Fabricana and, of course, Dressew.
Now. Come visit!
This fabric is a superb find–you absolutely made the right choice in taking it home!! It’s such an uplifting shade of pink, it really glows in photos (and I’m assuming in real life too, since it caught your eye from such a distance!). Love your choice of pattern for it as well, there’s something so striking and chic about a kimono topper in a bold fabric. =D
Thanks Abbey. It does practically glow. It was indeed the most vibrant of all the selection available. Huh…I’m trying to remember the other fabrics and I just can’t, LOL. I’ll have to go back and check them out.
‘Tis true…certain patterns lend themselves to certain fabrics or prints.
This is SO stunning, Sue! I love the idea of lining it and I honestly never even considered it! You have opened my eyes to this possibility, so thank you! I may have to do a little tutorial on this soon…. 😉
Aw thanks so much Helen! I’d love for you to do a lining tute! Some of the prettiest kimonos I saw when I was thrift shopping had linings and they hung so beautifully. That’s where I got the idea and why I wanted my own.
Wow – how gorgeous. And the fact that it’s fully lined!!!! I’d wear this thing for two weeks straight, day and night. SO pretty — and the lining adds just the weight and sumptuousness the fabric (may have) needed.
By the way, I really appreciated your last blog post. You are one of my go-to inspirational bloggers, and it’s actually nice to know it doesn’t all come easily to you. Thank you for sharing a bit of the challenge of blogging, too.
Thank you so much! You nailed it…the lining adds just the right amount of weight and sumptuousness {love that word} to the kimono. I mentioned on IG that I feel all swooshy and elegant wearing this.
And thanks for your comment on blogging in general. I think that by sharing these things, we can all lift each other higher!
God I love this! And well done on buying and sewing it up immediately. That’s the mark of an absolutely necessary fabric purchase, I’d say.
Thanks Fiona and good point about the time frame on my make. Yep…it was at the top of my sewing queue, so a necessary purchase. 🙂
Absolutely stunning, Sue! The colour, the shape, the wild print, i love it all! xxx
Thanks bunches Vix! Originally, my heart was set on a vintage kimono, but I just couldn’t find the right one for me. Curious if the UK has many…I wouldn’t imagine so but…

Oh my gosh, Sue!!! this is the most glorious thing, ever… I’m not surprised you fell in love with the fabric and HAD to have it. Tres irresistible!!!!
What an absolutely gorgeous kimono! I love that you used this beautiful bold patterned to make it! Absolutely stunning and it nice that you created a belt as well just in case you want to wear it that way!

The colour – it’s positively JUICY! This is the kind of shape I love to wear, and it looks great over a pair of jeans. Beautiful choice of fabric Sue!
How could anyone not LOVE this? The kimono, the fabric, the photos, you, your hair???!!! Stunning with all the elements coming together. The greens with the pinks and reds – sigh. This big bold pattern fits you soooo well. And I like the lining you added. Clearly you know what you want! Hahaha. I’m glad you wandered beyond the stash.
